FRAGMENTS | Irmgard Seefried

In September 1945, Lee Miller, a war photographer for Vogue, had the opportunity to listen to the talented young soprano Irmgard Seefried as she performed Madame Butterfly in Vienna. Inspired by the experience, the following day Miller captured a powerful image of Seefried against the haunting backdrop of the opera house ruins, her dress carefully pinned to her emaciated body. Allowing this photograph to remain solitary and incorporating Irmgard Seefried's voice.
